On May 14 2025, the first Digital Product Pass event took place together with Silicon Alps Cluster, NXP and VIRTUAL VEHICLE.

Advancing the Framework for Implementing a Digital Product Passport (DPP)

The framework for implementing a Digital Product Passport (DPP) for prioritized products is steadily advancing. A notable example is the recent publication of a DIN standard for the frontrunner, the Battery Passport: DIN DKE SPEC 99100 (Link).

During his presentation, Kurt Bischof from NXP highlighted existing approaches for applying DPPs to textiles, which are detailed in a position paper by DECATHLON (Link).

Bernhard Bergmair from SAL demonstrated how circular business models can be driven by the DPP. However, many questions remain unanswered. During the discussion, several key questions were addressed:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is the DPP data for a product stored?
A: Fundamentally, data can be stored either centrally or decentrally. However, since very few companies are able or willing to provide secure data centers accessible to third parties, specialized “service providers” are currently envisioned. These providers not only host the data but also ensure reliable backups.

Q: How is the validity of DPP data ensured?
A: A solid basis lies in life cycle assessments (LCA), which require systematic collection and reporting of information related to product life phases. Validation through audits or certified services is included in this process and ultimately helps build trust.

Q: How can small businesses in particular prepare for DPP implementation?
A: By staying informed and actively following ongoing developments at both European and national levels. DPP initiatives are still highly dynamic, but some promising approaches are already emerging.

This is exactly where the lighthouse project, PACE-DPP, comes into play. It aims to explore practical industrial implementation of the DPP in collaboration with public authorities and businesses. Public information sessions and workshops are being organized to discuss opportunities and challenges, ensuring they are considered in the implementation process.

One such opportunity is the DPP Networking Event on July 3rd in St. Pölten!
